Miután múlt hétvégén megnyílt Budapesten a világon egyedülálló Zelnik-gyűjteménynek véglegesen helyt adó Zelnik István Dél-Kelet Ázsiai Aranymúzeum az Andrássy úton, emlékezzünk egy pillanatra száz évvel korábbi elődjére, Hopp Ferenc világutazóra és az ő gyűjteményén alapuló Hopp Ferenc Kelet-Ázsiai Művészeti Múzeum létrejöttére. Ahogy a nagyságrenddel gazdagabb, impozáns gyűjteményekkel rendelkező és rendkívül profin menedzselt British Museum története is eredetileg mindössze egy 18. századi, sokat utazó, vagyonos ír orvos adományával indult, Hopp Ferenc végrendelete is napjainkra örvendetesen gazdag anyagot felmutató gyűjteményt eredményezett, ami mára már kinőtte az eredeti múzeumépületet is (melyet szintén ő ajándékozott az államnak).
Hopp Ferenc élete inspiráló Monarchia - korabeli sikertörténet, melynek során a német anyanyelvű optikus tanoncból bécsi és new yorki tapasztalatszerzést követően az olasz Calderoni cégtársa lesz Pesten, majd a Calderoni cég felvirágoztatója és vezetője 44 éven át. 1882 és 1914 között ötször kelt világkörüli útra, melyekről a magyar államra hagyományozott 4000 darabos műgyűjtemény is származik. Is, de nemcsak - tekintve, hogy a Calderoni cég a legmodernebb készülékeket forgalmazó fényképész szaküzletet is üzemeltetett, Hopp Ferenc természetesen végigfotózta utazásait és terjedelmes fényképgyűjteményt is hátrahagyott (ennek nagy része sajnos a 2. világháborúban elpusztult).

While the opening of the Zelnik Istvan South-East Asian Goldmuseum in Andrassy út harbouring the unique Zelnik - collection took place last weekend in Budapest, let's take once again a look at his predecessor of 100 years ago, the globetrotter Hopp Ferenc and the Hopp Ferenc East-Asian Art Museum based on his collection. Similarly to the history of the professionally managed, incomparably richer British Museum with its impressive collections, which also started with the single bequest of a wealthy physician who travelled a lot in the 18. century, the last will of Hopp Ferenc also resulted in a collection amounting nowadays to more than 20.000 art objects, more than it could fit into the original museum building (also donated by him to the state).
The life of Hopp Ferenc is a success story of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, considering how the German speaking optician apprentice became after studying his profession for years in Vienna and New York co-owner of the company Calderoni in Budapest, which flourished under his management for 44 years. He went on round-the-world journeys 5 times between 1882 and 1914 and his artefact collection with 4000 pieces originates from these expeditions. Not only that though - regarding the fact, that his store in Váci utca sold modern camera appliances, he left also thousands of photos behind (most of them were sadly lost in WW2).
