Hotel Fiume

A Fiume szálló legfőbb jellegzetessége, hogy sajnos már rég nem létezik. Nemcsak a szálló, az egész házsor, a Lánchíd utca páros, Duna felőli oldala elpusztult a 2. világháborúban. Így tehát a Lánchídtól sétálva déli irányba (vagyis az Erzsébet híd felé) baloldalt zavartalan kilátás nyílik a Dunára, jobboldalt pedig egymás után hagyjuk el a Siklót, a nulla kilométerkövet, a Bortársaság üzletét, a Baldaszti's új delikátesz üzletet és bisztrót, majd a Lánchíd 19 design hotelt. (A Lánchíd utca fölötti Öntőház utcai zsinagóga szintén elpusztult a háborúban.)

The main characteristics of Hotel Fiume is that it unfortunately doesn't exist since the war. Not only the hotel itself, but the whole block in Lánchíd street was demolished in WW II. Consequently if walking in Lánchíd str. from Chain Bridge to the south (direction Elisabeth Bridge), on the left hand side we have a view of the Danube while on the right hand side we first pass the Funicular, with the Zero Kilometre Stone in front, then a Winestore, a new delicatesse shop and bistro called Baldaszti's and Lánchíd 19 design hotel. (The synagogue in Öntőház street above Lánchíd str. was also destroyed in the war.)

Továbbsétálva elhaladunk az egyik legértékesebb fővárosi ingatlan, a Várkert bazár (régi képek az Ifiparkról itt) és az évek óta üresen álló Várkert kioszk előtt, majd áttérünk a Várkert rakpartra, melynek szintén csak a jobboldala épült be bérpalotákkal, ahol számos híres építész lakott és ahol pl. a város egyik legkeskenyebb épülete, a Mándl-ház is található. Aki pedig szereti a sétákat két sörözés vagy fröccsözés közé ékelni és ennek megfelelően a Lánchíd sörözőből indult a hídtól hídig túrára, az Erzsébet híd lábánál található, egykor Erzsébet-híd (ma Platán) presszó-sörözőben ki is pihenheti a gyaloglás fáradalmait.

If we keep walking we pass front of one of the most valuable properties in Budapest, the once well-kept Castle Garden Bazaar, now in ruins (photos from the Sixties and Seventies from Ifipark here) and the Castle Garden Kiosk, which also stands empty since years. We cross to reach Várkert rakpart (quay) and here again there are buildings only on the right hand side, in a street where many well-known architects used to live and where we can find one of the narrowest houses in town, the Mándl-house. And those who prefer to organize tours from one pub to the next and therefore started from Café Lánchíd, they can have a well-deserved rest at Elisabeth Bridge in the former Erzsébet-híd (now Platán) Café and Pub.

Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest

A világ legjobb szállodáinak egyike, Közép-Európában listavezető, nekünk mindenképp a legszebb. Az 1907-ben elkészült szecessziós épület 1987 óta a Világörökség része, 2004 óta pedig felújítva csodálhatjuk meg. Két étterme földig érő ablakokkal néz a Dunára, a lobby (passzázs) részből nyíló art deco bár (a képen) mindig nyitva áll, a legfelső szinten pedig medence, wellness és fitness rész várja a vendégeket. One of the best hotels in the world, leading the list in Central-Europe as a luxury destination, for us surely the most beautiful hotel building. It was concluded in 1907 in Sezession/Art Nouveau style, is part of the World Heritage since 1987 and was renovated in 2004. Both restaurants looking onto Chain Bridge and Danube have floor-to-ceiling windows, the art deco bar (pictured above) opening from the lobby with vaulted glass roof (passage) is always open and on the top floor guests can indulge themselves in spa, indoor pool and fitness room. P.S. Hotel Gresham is Budapest's finest hotel, a bit Gaudi and very Agatha Christie!



Budapest, 1972 - Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton

Elizabeth Taylor 1972. februárjában Budapesten, az Intercontinental (jelenleg Marriott) szálló 9. emeletén ünnepelte 40. születésnapját. A zártkörű partyra 80 vendég érkezett, többek között Grace monacói hercegnő, David Niven, Michael Caine, Ringo Starr, Richard Burton összes testvére és 7 nagykövet. Az ünnepelt születésnapi ajándékként férjétől a Taj Mahal nevű, szívalakú, 17. századból származó gyémántot kapta.
Minden idők egyik leghíresebb színészpárja filmforgatás miatt hónapokat töltött Budapesten, íme egy másik történet a velük való találkozásról.
Elizabeth Taylor 2011. március 23-án, 79 éves korában elhunyt.

Elizabeth Taylor celebrated her 40. birthday in February 1972 in Budapest, Hotel Intercontinental (now Marriott). 80 guests came to the private party, Princess Grace von Monaco, David Niven, Michael Caine, Ringo Starr, all Burton siblings, 7 ambassadors among them. Richard Burton presented his wife with the Taj Mahal diamond, a heart-shaped gem from the 17. century.

Elizabeth Taylor died at the age of 79 on March 23, 2011.
