A magyar származású Pető Mihály fotóiból nyílik kiállítás szeptember 17-én Londonban, a National Portrait Gallery-ben. A megtekinthető fotók Elizabeth Taylor és Richard Burton legendás párosán kívül pl. Ian McKellen-ről, Nelson Mandela-ról és Paul McCartney-ról készültek. Fenti képet eddig nem láthatta a nagyközönség, 1963 októberében készült egy BBC rádiójáték felvételekor.

Pető Mihály 1908-ban született Batán, majd a II. vh. kitörése előtt Londonba emigrált, ahol Károlyi Mihály titkáraként is dolgozott, többek között emigráns magyar kormányt alakításán. 1945 után fényképezést tanult Párizsban, az 1948-as londoni olimpiát már végigfotózta. Az 50-es és 60-as években sokat utazott, Európában, a Közel-Keleten, Ázsiában, végigjárta Indiát. 

1970-ben bekövetkezett halála után családja a mintegy 13.000 eredeti negatívot a skóciai Dundee egyetemnek ajándékozta.

The ten photographs by Michael Peto (1908-1970) taken in London during the 1950s and 1960s will go on display from 17 September 2013 in the National Portrait Gallery. The exhibition will also include the previously unexhibited photograph shown above of Elizabeth Taylor with Richard Burton during the recording of the acclaimed BBC radio production of Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood in October 1963.

Mihály Petö was born in the small town of Bata, Hungary in 1908. In the 1930s, Petö moved to Budapest and was able to reach Great Britain before World War II. During the war, he lived in London and worked for the Ministry of Labour. In his free time, Petö worked with other Hungarians, planning for the postwar future of their country and worked as personal secretary to Count Mihály Károlyi. In the early post-war years, Peto went to Paris, where he connected with the Hungarian arts community. In 1948, Peto took notable photographs of athletes in the Olympics. Much of his work reflects his subsequent travels throughout Europe, the Middle East, and countries in Asia, including India. The Michael Peto Photographic Collection is now held and administered by Archive Services at the University of Dundee, Scotland, which holds the copyright.

Budapest Brains 2011: The Brain Prize - Az Agy-díj

Az első Agy díjjal 2011-ben kitüntetett három, magyar származású, évtizedek óta együttműködő tudós közül mindössze egyikük folytatja itthon kutatásait, Freund Tamás, a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia Kísérleti Orvostudományi Kutatóintézetének igazgatója. Az intézet 1952 óta működik Budapesten, amely ma az egyetlen hely, ahol kizárólag orvostudományi kutatásokat folytatnak Magyarországon, és amely az idegtudomány területén Közép-Európa vezető kutatóintézetévé emelkedett. (Európai Bizottság Centre of Excellence címe)
A nemzetközi agykutatás hetének programjaira 2014-ben márc. 10 - 16. között kerül majd sor.

The 3 Hungarian scientists awarded with the first Brain-Prize in 2011 are working together since decades, however only one of them continues to research in Hungary, Budapest: Freund Tamás, director of the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. This institute, founded in 1952 is currently the only research institute in Hungary dedicated exclusively to medical research and is regarded as the leading research institute in the field of neuroscience in Central Europe. Pesti biciklizés - Cycling in Budapest

A BuBi projekt csak jövőre indul, a biciklis szezon kezdetét azonban semmi nem hátráltathatja! Bár állítólag New Yorkban május a biciklis hónap, Pesten ma ismét sor került a Critical Mass bringás felvonulásra (egy ideig az utolsóra), aki él és mozogni tud, áprilisban már biciklivel közlekedik!

Though apparently in New York May is bike month, in Pest the Critical Mass ride took place again today (the final one for the present), and all those alive are riding around on bycicle in April!

Everyone in this country knows these artists and can sing this song - not sure about the dance though!
Csík band plays a song from Quimby in the first video recorded at Sziget festival in 2008, the second video shows last year's winner of the talent show Fölszállott a páva in the folk dance category, Berecz István. I have deliberately chosen videos of live performances which show the interactions between artists and audience.
