A magyar származású Pető Mihály fotóiból nyílik kiállítás szeptember 17-én Londonban, a National Portrait Gallery-ben. A megtekinthető fotók Elizabeth Taylor és Richard Burton legendás párosán kívül pl. Ian McKellen-ről, Nelson Mandela-ról és Paul McCartney-ról készültek. Fenti képet eddig nem láthatta a nagyközönség, 1963 októberében készült egy BBC rádiójáték felvételekor.
Pető Mihály 1908-ban született Batán, majd a II. vh. kitörése előtt Londonba emigrált, ahol Károlyi Mihály titkáraként is dolgozott, többek között emigráns magyar kormányt alakításán. 1945 után fényképezést tanult Párizsban, az 1948-as londoni olimpiát már végigfotózta. Az 50-es és 60-as években sokat utazott, Európában, a Közel-Keleten, Ázsiában, végigjárta Indiát.
1970-ben bekövetkezett halála után családja a mintegy 13.000 eredeti negatívot a skóciai Dundee egyetemnek ajándékozta.
The ten photographs by Michael Peto (1908-1970) taken in London during
the 1950s and 1960s will go on display from 17 September 2013 in the National Portrait Gallery. The exhibition will also include
the previously unexhibited photograph shown above of Elizabeth Taylor with Richard
Burton during the recording of the acclaimed BBC radio production of
Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood in October 1963.
Mihály Petö was born in the small town of Bata, Hungary
in 1908. In the 1930s, Petö moved to Budapest
and was able to reach Great Britain before World War II.
During the war, he lived in London and worked for the Ministry of Labour. In his free time, Petö worked with other Hungarians, planning for
the postwar future of their country and worked as personal secretary to Count Mihály Károlyi. In the early post-war years, Peto went to Paris, where he connected with the Hungarian arts community. In 1948, Peto took notable photographs of athletes in the Olympics. Much of his work reflects his subsequent travels throughout Europe, the Middle East, and countries in Asia, including India. The Michael Peto Photographic Collection is now held and administered by Archive Services at the University of Dundee, Scotland, which holds the copyright.
