A történet főszereplője a Vasfüggöny mögül Párizson át (ahol Sarah de Lantosra változtatta a nevét) New Yorkba disszidált keresett modell, több országban hátrahagyott férjekkel, szeretőkkel, mindenhol felbukkanó magyarokkal, kémkedés vádjával, genfi széfben letétbe helyezett családi ékszereket megszerezni próbáló mániákus udvarlóval, Atomenergiakutató Bizottságban dolgozó barátnővel. The triple murder, committed on New Year's Day in 1985 was mentioned in New York Times, then in March 1985 it was featured in the New York Magazine as the cover story. Lantos Piroska was a sought after model in socialist Hungary, who defected through Paris (where she changed her name to Sarah de Lantos) to New York from behind the Iron Curtain, leaving behind husbands, lovers, and with various Hungarians appearing in different roles in the story, such as a maniac suitor who was after his family jewelry stored in a safe deposit box in a Geneva bank and a girlfriend working for Hungary's Atomic Energy Research Commission, while Lantos herself was in the meantime accused of spying. During the investigation everybody seemed to be a suspect, finally the maniac suitor proved to be the committor. The investigation in New York was led by a - Hungarian emigrant detective-turned-private investigator.
